American ceramic artist Courtney Mattison selected coral as the medium. Coral, as the most common species on the seafloor, may not be so special, but in Mattison's hands, this ethnic group has transformed into a large-scale ceramic art installation and reappeared to the world in the form of art.
Courtney Mattison was born and raised in San Francisco. He received an interdisciplinary bachelor's degree in marine ecology and ceramic sculpture from Skidmore College in 2008, a master's degree in environmental studies from Brown University in 2011, and a master's degree from Rhode Island School of Design. Also studied ceramic sculpture at Skidmore College.
Mattison researches and produces works related to ocean protection, also to encourage those in power and citizens to save money, to improve our ever-changing ocean, and to strive to improve people's protection of the earth. She took inspiration from environmental science and marine life, and used coral reefs to create a series of sculptures that mimic the beauty of nature.
