Lisa Belsky

Lisa Belsky is a ceramic artist and life long knitter and crocheter. She currently lives and works in Philadelphia, PA. She received her BFA from Tyler School of Art in 2004 and her MFA from the Ohio State University in 2008. In May of 2017 she was recognized as one of Ceramics Monthly Magazine's Emerging Artists of 2017. She recently received the 2017 award for Excellence In Clay at the 41st Annual Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show.

Knitting and crocheting was passed down through generations of women in Lisa Belsky family and has been an important part of Lisa Belsky life since childhood. The act of knitting and crocheting provides she with a strong sense of nostalgia and a connection to family. Lisa Belsky view this body of work as a metaphor for embracing change while preserving memories and traditions.

Lisa Belsky each piece begins as hand knit or crocheted fabric. The fabric is manipulated, shaped and then dipped into porcelain slip. During the firing process the original fabric burns away leaving behind a ceramic remnant or record of what was once there. The stitches, now preserved as clay, have become the structure and texture of the new object. A natural movement occurs during the firing process that can result in collapse, split seams, folding and slumping. Lisa Belsky embrace and welcome these changes when they occur and view them as an important part of the work. Lisa Belsky hope that onesefl work will evoke a sense of both familiarity and curiosity in the viewer, while asking for a deeper appreciation of the handmade object when used in day to day life.

What is your favorite response that you have had toward your work so far?

Lisa Belsky:
Honestly, I like when I freak people out. When they are coming to a booth at a craft show and they are so sure that it is fabric and they touch it and it’s not. (laughter) I like seeing the reaction people get.

Do you have a basic idea of how much time you have to put into each piece?

Lisa Belsky:
It depends on what stitch I am using. For the most part when it comes to knitting and crocheting, I am a much faster crocheter than I am a knitter. So that will make the piece take less or more time based on that alone. But depending on what I want the form to look like, I think about the way I make my forms, in a similar fashion to slab building. So depending on the complexity of the form, that will add to the time it takes as well.

What do you think of imitation?

Lisa Belsky:
I think imitation is part of our making. It is all around. Because I really believe ideas are some version of other ideas that has just taken a new shape.
