Introduction to the Museum

Introduction to Beijing Guozhong Ceramic Art Museum

Ceramics is a brilliant gem in the treasure trove of human cultural and artistic heritage. It not only embodies humanity's immense creativity and profound cultural spirit but also adds splendid chapters to the annals of world civilization. Artistic ceramics carry the unique cultural legacy of human artistic development, transcending time and space, as well as national boundaries. They will continue to be inherited and developed, enhancing human civilization and making human life more vibrant. Historically, ceramics have made significant contributions to China's material and spiritual civilization. In particular, porcelain has stood out in China. Through the dissemination and promotion along the 'Silk Road,' it ultimately became a symbol of Chinese culture, recognized and interpreted by the world as the national emblem—China.

It is our shared historical responsibility to inherit and revitalize this great art form. Established in 2010, the Guozhong Ceramic Art Museum, a subsidiary of Beijing Yuanyang Investment Group, as the first professional ceramic art museum in the capital, aims to vigorously promote ceramic culture and foster the prosperity and development of ceramic art. It strives to build an artistic palace hall where international top-tier ceramic art experts and scholars can engage in academic research, exchange ideas, and showcase their works.

The Guozhong Ceramic Art Museum is located in Ping'an Fu, on Ping'an Avenue in the central urban area of Beijing. It exudes an ancient charm and carries a long and profound historical memory of the former royal mansion. Covering an area of more than 4,000 square meters, the museum is divided into four zones: an underground collection area, a first-floor exhibition hall, a second-floor office and service area, and a third-floor indoor exhibition space along with an outdoor leisure area. Designed and laid out by a top-tier domestic and international design team, it integrates traditional Chinese cultural elements with contemporary international concepts, creating a harmonious blend of classical and modern aesthetics that complement each other. The museum's Academic Committee is composed of a group of renowned domestic and international experts. The first director was Professor Zhang Shouzhi, a famous ceramic designer and educator, who was one of the five members of the initial expert group tasked with reviving China's ceramic industry after the founding of the People's Republic of China. The second director is Professor Jacques Kaufmann, a world-famous art ceramic expert, former Chairman of IAC (International Academy of Ceramics), and current Honorary Chairman of IAC. The executive team consists of professionals with extensive experience in serving major domestic and international ceramic exhibitions, capable of meeting the needs for exchange and exhibition of top-tier ceramic art at home and abroad.

Over more than a decade since its establishment, the art museum has successively held dozens of high-level exhibitions and academic forums, which have received widespread recognition and praise from both society and the industry. Particularly during the pandemic, the museum adopted a combination of online and offline methods to host the 2020 IAC New Member Works Exhibition and Academic Forum. Over 20 million people worldwide watched it simultaneously online, achieving great success and earning high recognition from the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC) as well as appreciation from a large number of its members. It has made outstanding contributions to international ceramic art exchanges and academic development. Guozhong Ceramic Art Museum is an important member of a batch of domestic and international industry associations and academic institutions, including a group member of IAC and a vice-president unit of the China Ceramic Industry Association.

With the development of technology and the strong demand from the market, Guozhong Ceramic Art Museum has once again joined hands with tech giants such as global Fortune 500 companies to co-create an online metaverse version of the Guozhong Ceramic Art Museum. This initiative creates infinite possibilities for the development and prosperity of art ceramics. Through our relentless pursuit and dedicated exploration, we believe that the Guozhong Ceramic Art Museum will become a world-renowned ceramic artpalace hall , continuously driving art ceramics toward new glories!

Ceramics have made great contributions to the history and contemporary of human society, and the history of ceramic culture has been brilliant. How to inherit and develop this great culture and art well tests the wisdom of our contemporary art and ceramics personnel. As the former President and current President Emeritus of IAC, I am deeply responsible.

Founded in 2012, Guozhong Ceramic Art Museum is located in a palace in the center of Beijing, the capital of China. Over the past eight years, under the leadership of Mr. Zhang Shouzhi, a famous ceramic professor in China and the first curator of Guozhong Ceramic Art Museum, it has been working hard to promote Chinese ceramics and international ceramic art works and academic exchanges with the idea of ceramic public welfare undertakings. It has been highly recognized by China and the world ceramic art circles, achieved extraordinary achievements and won honors.

Since the first IAC member literature exhibition was undertaken by China National Ceramic Art Museum in 2015, IAC and Guozhong Ceramic Art Museum have started many times of cooperation and exchange, and became the group member of IAC in 2018. For a period of time, IAC leaders have had many exchanges and understanding with President Zheng of Yuanyang investment group, the organizer of Guozhong National Ceramic Art Museum. They have learned that Guozhong Ceramic Art Museum is striving to build it into a global international ceramic art museum with public welfare action, promote international exchange and cooperation of more ceramic artists, and do better for global ceramic art more contributions. This development concept is in line with IAC's development spirit. After research, IAC signed an agreement with Guozhong Ceramic Art Museum in 2019 and established a long-term strategic partnership with the aim of providing better services to more IAC members and ceramic artists in the world.

Today, I was appointed the second curator of Guozhong Ceramic Art Museum. I am deeply honored. Under the principle of cooperation between IAC and Guozhong Ceramic Art Museum, I will cooperate with the existing team of Guozhong Ceramic Art Museum and with more international ceramic experts, scholars and institutions to make the development of Guozhong ceramic art museum better. Make greater contribution to the world ceramic art circle!

    Thank you!
