Preface

I first learnt about Jenny Wong through her works in two group exhibitions held in Shenyang.  In “Object Matter Mind”, we will get to learn more about her and her ceramic art practice.

Wong says in her “previous life” she was a paper-pusher.  In her “current life” she lives in Australia, where she became acquainted with clay.  Clay keeps her company.  I sensed that growing up in Hong Kong, Wong was a typical diligent student.  She visited Shenyang many years ago.  Due to work and family commitments, she has been on the move for years.  Wherever Wong resides, she adopts a local stray cat.

Wong is rigorous in her work style and direct in her expression.  Her art practice, as with her life, must be “just right”.  There seems to be a higher quantum of rationality than emotion in her sensibility.

As we sat and quietly sipped our tea, Jenny methodically prepared a meal, shared stories of her travels and fragments of her creative life.  All the while discussing the theme and aspects of presenting this exhibition, hammering out every detail…

She says, “Clay is another 'language' through which I communicate with the world; an addition to words, expression and movement.  It is my means to commune with place, people and time.”

Wong has chosen to collaborate with the “Ten Minutes Culture and Art Space” as it was in Shenyang at “Ten Minutes” that she learnt about the various cultures of Northeast China. “Ten Minutes” hosts cultural events including Manchu music presentations, art salons, painting exhibitions, etc.  There is always free-flowing interaction between artists and the audience.  One can also enjoy meals prepared by Li Mao, the owner of “Ten Minutes”.  In his space, one enjoys art in various forms in a relaxing atmosphere.

This exhibition has three components: ceramic art display, workshops and salons. The components form a coherent whole providing mutual feedback; and inviting dialogue with the broader community.

The display of art work can be understood as an invitation to dialogue through visual sense and space.  The workshops add tactile experience.  Participants are invited to connect their haptic experience with memory and time.  The salons extend conversations beyond the art circle.  People of different professional background gather at the “Ten Minutes Culture and Art Space”.  Art anchors life.  Life is art.

“Mask” is Wong’s most recent body of work.  Created in 2020 during the COVID epidemic, hundreds of masks were fired in Jingdezhen.  They are the centerpiece of the exhibition.  At the end of each workshop conducted during the exhibition period, participants will add to the installation.

Other works in the exhibition were created during ceramic activities in which Wong participated in various places during the last two years living in China.  She will also be making new works on site during the period of the exhibition.

Clay.  Fire.  Human creativity...  The essence of artistic creation lies in our humanity.  It is also a motivation and passion. “Object”, “Matter” and “Mind” are interconnected.
