2017-11-08

On November 3rd, at the invitation of Prof. Dong Shaoming, Director and Prof. Zeng Yeping, Deputy Director and Prof. Zhang Jingxian, Structural Ceramics and Composites Engineering Research Center, Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor William G. (Bill) Fahrenholtz, Chief Editor of the Journal of the American Ceramic Society, Fellow of the American Ceramic Society and Professor of Missouri University of Science and Technology Prof. Gregory E.(Greg) Hilmas, Fellow of American Ceramic Society, Interim President of School of Materials, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Academician of World Ceramic Academy, President of European Ceramic Society, President of Slovak Academy of Sciences, Prof. Pavol Š Ajgalik, Academician of World Ceramic Academy, Fellow of American Ceramic Society, Fellow of European Ceramic Society, Professor Paolo Colombo from University of Padua, Italy, Professor Zhang Guojun from Donghua University and other institutes of Shanghai Institute of Ceramics conducted academic exchanges. The conference was chaired by Professor Dong Shaoming.

Professor William G. (Bill) Fahrenholtz gave a report entitled "Current Status and Emerging Trends in Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics. "The research status of ultra-high temperature ceramics was introduced, and the development trend of ultra-high temperature ceramics in the future was discussed. As Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of The American Ceramic Society, Professor Fahrenholtz also presented a report entitled "The Importance of Being a Peer-Reviewer for Publishing Journal Papers". This paper analyzes how to write high-quality academic papers from the perspective of reviewers and editors, and elaborates on the roles of peer review and reviewers in the process of journal paper publishing. Prof. Gregory E.(Greg) Hilmas gave an academic report entitled "Ultra-High Temperature Ceramic Research at Missouri S & T". The main research projects of Missouri University of Science and Technology in the field of ultra-high temperature ceramics and their research progress are introduced.

Pavol Š Ajgalik has given an academic report entitled "Silicon Nitride -a promising candidate for the bioactive composite implants". This paper discusses the feasibility of silicon nitride ceramics as biomaterials from theoretical and practical perspectives, and introduces a series of research achievements of silicon nitride ceramics in biomaterials application. Prof. Paolo Colombo gave an academic presentation entitled "Additive Manufacturing of Ceramics Using Inorganic Polyethylene". He introduced the current application of polymer conversion ceramics in 3D and 4D printing. He focused on the research progress of SIOC ceramic curing and cracking, showing a series of cool 3D printing results. Prof. Zhang Guojun gave an academic report entitled "Zirconium-Based Non-Oxide Ceramics for Nuclear Applications", introducing the application prospect and research status of Zr-based non-oxide ceramics in the next generation of nuclear power generation.

The rich and colorful content of the report has aroused the strong interest of the majority of researchers and graduate students, and the participants have conducted in-depth discussions and achieved good results.
